A Legal Assistant, also referred to as a Paralegal, is an individual qualified through education or training who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, government agency, or other entity in a capacity or function which involves the performance of substantive legal work, which work requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that, absent such an assistant, the attorney would perform the task. Such work is performed under the ultimate direction or supervision of an attorney or may be authorized by administrative, statutory or court authority.
